Where to stay in Lokrum: plan a mainland base

The practical answer to where to stay in Lokrum is to choose accommodation on the mainland and visit the island for the day. Overnight stays on Lokrum are prohibited. The visitor rules also prohibit being there before the first or after the last official reserve boat, so your sleeping arrangements and your island visit need to be planned separately.

The mainland areas to consider include Old Town, Pile, Ploče, Gruž and Lapad. Choose between them by tracing the route from your actual address to your departure or meeting point. The official Lokrum boat uses the Old City Port. A neighbourhood name helps with orientation, but it should not replace looking at where the accommodation entrance is.

Old Town, Pile and Ploče as access areas

For a ferry day, start with the Old City Port and work backwards to the accommodation address. Old Town is the city area containing the departure harbour; Pile and Ploče are other named areas to compare when organising your approach. Ask for the location of the entrance and consider the walk you will actually make, rather than relying on a general claim of being near Lokrum.

Ploče also appears on the airport shuttle route. That can be useful when your first journey is from DBV, but the shuttle stop and the Old City Port remain separate places. Pile is the meeting area for the kayaking activity described here. Your preferred activity therefore changes which mainland point matters most. Use the arrival guide to connect the airport journey with your chosen base.

Gruž and Lapad: include the onward journey

Gruž and Lapad are mainland accommodation areas too. Gruž is the location of the main bus station at the end of the airport shuttle route. If choosing a base there, include your onward journey to the Old City Port when planning a Lokrum ferry day. Do the same from a Lapad address, using the real accommodation location rather than assuming every waterfront address serves the island boat.

The accommodation-area directory behind these place names is historical and outdated. It is useful for locating districts, rather than for deciding current room availability, quality or value. Compare the present accommodation details yourself. Use the district list to assess whether the address works for your arrival and the island activity you have chosen.

Build the day around the return boat

For the 2026 season, the regular adult reserve ticket is 30 EUR with the official outward and return crossings included. Keep that island budget separate from your room budget. Entry also costs the regular 30 EUR when arriving independently, so another transport arrangement should be compared on its own terms.

As recorded on 4 November 2026, the timetable effective from 1 November listed 17:00 as the last return from Lokrum. That is a dated schedule snapshot, not a promise for every visit. Check the current timetable and remember that the boat does not run in poor weather. The ferry guide covers the published departures and ticket arrangements. Do not leave an overnight plan dependent on remaining on the island after the last boat.

A kayaking day starts on the mainland

The guided kayaking and snorkelling activity meets at the Pile local bus stop by Brsalje 8. Arrive 15 minutes before its start and look for the orange umbrella at the meeting point, rather than going straight to the beach. The included services are a professional kayak guide, a sit-on-top double kayak and paddles, snorkelling equipment, bottled water, insurance and a waterproof barrel for personal items.

The route passes Lokrum on the water, with the snorkelling stop at Betina and a return alongside the city walls. It does not land on Lokrum. Choose this when you want the coastal water activity; choose an island visit when you want time ashore. Swimming ability and basic fitness matter, and poor weather can change or cancel the trip. The kayaking and snorkelling guide explains the route in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Should I search for hotels or a hotel on Lokrum?

Plan accommodation on the mainland. Overnight stays in the reserve are prohibited, so the useful search is for a mainland address that works with your ferry or activity meeting point.

Which accommodation area is closest to my departure?

First choose the departure itself: the official ferry uses the Old City Port, while the kayaking meeting point is at Pile by Brsalje 8. Compare the actual address with that point rather than choosing by district name alone.

Does the kayaking activity collect me at my accommodation?

Meet at the stated Pile meeting point for this activity. Allow time to reach Brsalje 8 and arrive 15 minutes early; organise your journey there as part of the day.

Can I stay on the island after the last official boat?

Remaining after the last official reserve boat is prohibited. Plan your visit around the day’s return service and sleep at your mainland base.
