An overview of Lokrum

Lokrum combines wooded island scenery with monastery remains, gardens and a rocky coast off Dubrovnik. The choice that shapes a visit is whether to explore on land or see the island from the water. A ferry journey gives access to the reserve; a panoramic boat circuit concentrates on the coastline. Guided kayaking adds paddling and a snorkeling pause on a route passing the island.

The monastery complex, botanical garden, Fort Royal and the saltwater basin known as the Dead Sea offer different reasons to step ashore. Start with the island tour comparison for guided options, or the ferry and admission guide for an independent day. Keep the return journey part of the plan from the beginning.

Ways to experience Lokrum

Island walks, a coastal circuit, guided kayaking and a boat excursion with reserve admission offer different ways to spend the day.

A nature reserve with peacocks

Lokrum is a special reserve of forest vegetation. Holm oak and Aleppo pine woodland are part of its character, alongside rocky shores, marine caves and seagrass habitats. This is a protected landscape to visit on designated paths and visitor areas. Staying on those routes also keeps an island walk focused on the places intended for visitors.

Indian peafowl are an introduced species on Lokrum. Watching birds moving through the grounds can be part of the experience, but wildlife should be left undisturbed and unfed. The island also supports bats and other birds. A wildlife sighting is a welcome part of a walk rather than something to build a fixed timetable around.

Monastery, gardens and the Dead Sea

The historic complex brings together surviving monastery buildings, basilica ruins and a later residence. These layers make more sense when viewed as an evolving place rather than a single untouched medieval building. The history guide connects the monastery, older gardens and historical paths towards Fort Royal.

The botanical research and display garden is distinct from the older monastery and landscape gardens. Along the coast, Mrtvo more, the Dead Sea, is a saltwater basin formed by a collapsed cave and connected to the open sea. Read about the swimming places before deciding how swimming fits into the rest of an island visit.

Ferry, boat circuit or kayak

The regular adult ticket for season 2026 costs 30 EUR and includes reserve admission plus the official return boat journey from the Old City Port. Regular admission for visitors arriving independently also costs 30 EUR. A sightseeing cruise has a different purpose: the glassboat circuit goes around Lokrum without an island stay, with a skipper, guide and fuel included.

For the guided walking combination, Lokrum belongs to the three-hour option, with ferry and admission extra. The direct service from Cavtat, Mlini or Srebreno includes return travel but charges reserve admission separately. The combined Lokrum and Blue Cave excursion includes the island ticket, guide, drinks and snorkeling equipment. Compare these with boat trips and private guided visits and boats.

Good to know before a day visit

For kayaking, the routes passing Lokrum use Betina for the snorkeling pause; they do not include landing on the island. Swimming ability and basic fitness matter, and weather may change or cancel a paddle. Choose kayaking for an active outing on the sea, and a ferry or an island-stop boat excursion when the gardens and monastery are the priority.

Overnight stays are prohibited, as is remaining before the first or after the last official reserve boat. Fire and smoking are forbidden; drones require permission. On the timetable published from 1 November 2026, viewed on 4 November 2026, the final return was 17:00. Bad weather can stop the boats, so check the current service and leave room for your return.

Lokrum seen from the mainland

The view from Dubrovnik gives a useful first impression of the wooded island and its position offshore. Once the route is chosen, keep the mainland departure point and the island return arrangements together in the day plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an independent guide?

This is an independent guide with no connection to the reserve administration or tour operators. It explains the island and compares ways to visit so that the choice of route comes before the choice of ticket.

Does every boat tour land on Lokrum?

The glassboat circuit is a sightseeing journey around the island. Other boat excursions offer an island stop, sometimes only with a selected option. Guided kayaking passes Lokrum and uses Betina for a snorkeling pause.

Can I spend the night on the island?

Overnight stays are prohibited. Plan a daytime visit around the official boat operating day and return to the mainland afterwards. The final journey belongs in the plan even when swimming or walking is the main reason for visiting.
